Raising Backyard Quail

About this Event
Coturnix quail are small but mighty birds that can start laying delicious, nutrient-dense eggs in as little as six weeks from hatch. Each hen can produce 300+ eggs a year! Quail are cold-hardy, heat-tolerant and quiet - the hens make no noise at all!
In this class, you will learn how to:
- choose the breed of quail that's right for you
- create housing to help your quail thrive
- choose the right feed for chicks and adults
- find the supplements quail need
- manage males to keep hens safe and happy
What you'll see:
You'll take a farm tour and see several examples of housing (brooder, tiered cage, and three aviaries). If you are interested in raising quail for meat, you can stick around for an optional 20-minute demonstration of quail processing. (Hands-on processing classes are offered separately.)
What you'll get:
Participants will get a quail care guide, a list of quail resources, and a pair of quail egg scissors.
Can kids attend?
The class is designed for adults and older children. If you have younger children who would like to come out to the farm, please contact us to schedule a time for a separate visit.
What to wear
Class is held outside, weather permitting. We highly recommend wearing closed-toed shoes for the farm tour.
Add-Ons
To encourage carpooling, you can add up to two other people onto your registration for just $15 each.
About
This class will be lead by Sarah Guerere from Quinn's Quails and takes place at GullyRumpus Farm in North Highlands, a farm owned by Linda Easton-Waller. Sarah and Linda partner to supply quail eggs to the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, Kru Japanese Restaurant, and There And Back Cafe.
