Join us for the first ever edition of Raise It, Ottawa's newest spoken word series! Get ready for a warm evening of poetry and community
This spoken word showcase features Vancouver poet Kay Fraser, as well as Ottawa's own Apollo the Child, and Jenica Kay.

Kay Fraser (She/Her) is an award winning spoken word poet, published writer, educator and wellness practitioner. With a commitment to healing, liberation and decolonization, her works strikes a balance between individual musings and social commentary; navigating the experiences that make, shape and break us as individuals and as a whole.

Khaleefa ‘Apollo the Child’ Hamdan is an accomplished spoken word poet, hip hop artist, and former radio host, known for his commitment to youth empowerment through the arts. As a former co-director of the Urban Legends Poetry Collective, he pioneered the Youth Speak program in collaboration with the Ottawa Public Library, providing free after-school writing opportunities for young people.
Apollo's impactful work includes his celebrated cinepoem, "My Hero Drives a Cab," which has been featured on Button Poetry, as well as his participation in the CBC documentary "In Their Words." A seasoned representative of Ottawa, he has showcased his talent on nine national stages.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Apollo is one half of the innovative hip hop funk duo Funky Colours. He actively engages in the arts community, mentoring emerging artists and championing positive change through creative expression.

Jenica Kay (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and spoken word poet. Former Slam Master of Capital Slam, and current Slam Master and Co-Director of Urban Legends Poetry Collective, Jenica has been working to build Ottawa's spoken word community for over a decade. Their poetry centers around themes of healing, growth, and personal exploration.
