About this Event
Marking Railway 200, a guided walk along the west bank (City Centre bank) of the River Usk in Newport, exploring the long-gone and long-forgotten mass of railway lines that led to the Pillgwenlly area, Docks and Transporter Bridge (with its 'upside-down track').
Photos will be available during the walk to illustrate the maze of railway lines leading to locomotive engine sheds, still standing, of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The walk will finish at Newport’s magnificent Transporter Bridge brand new Visitor Centre, once the site of many lines of different companies, leading to and from the busy docks.
The walk will start from Newport Bus Station and is about 2 miles in length, entirely flat and taken at a slow walking pace, with frequent stops to explain each location’s past railway infrastructure. A service bus from Pillgwenlly can be used to go back to the town centre or a direct 1-mile walk can be taken from the Visitor Centre.
Please note:
Once you have booked on please keep an eye on the InBox of the email address you used to book your place for the event, as important information will be sent out prior to the day.
As this walk includes the chance to explore the Visitor Centre, there is no official finish time so please allow for this when planning your attendance - we would hate for you to miss this opportunity!
