"Blues at it's juke-jointin' finest." Rae and the Royal Peacocks infuse classic blues styles with contemporary energy. All this built on the rich blues tradition of Atlanta through the decades. No matter what blues genre resonates most with you, you're guaranteed to dance when this band takes the stage.
The members of the band Rae & The Royal Peacocks met at a metro area blues jam on the north side of the ATL. The singer and guitarist hit it off and dove into the deep end of the Blues pool looking for the perfect sound. One that's upbeat, juke-joint, soulful, and irrepressibly danceable.
Their musical expedition spans the early underground circuits of Bessie Smith in the 20s and 30s, to the smoky 50s and 60s, and into the soulful, funky seventies. Atlanta was at the heart of it all. This is especially true for a “lounge with a stage” owned by a strong woman called Mama Cunningham on Auburn Avenue: The Royal Peacock.
The vibe was pure energy, electric & fun. From 1949 to when it shut its doors in 1973, The Royal Peacock was the place to be for seeing legends and legends-in-the-making. Etta James, James Brown, Little Richard, BB King, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, the Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Percy Welch, Lavern Baker, Glady’s Knight and the Pips, Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, and even Jimmie Hendrix - to name a few.
To quote Little Richard, The Royal Peacock “regenerates the heart and makes the liver quiver, the bladder spatter and the knees freeze.” So, when it was time to get a band off the ground, there was no question about the name. It would be - Rae and the Royal Peacocks.
The band features several of Atlanta's favorite musicians: Danny Vinson (guitar), Art McNaughton (drums), Harold Pattillo (bass) and Valerie Waters (keys), and Rebekah "Rae" Easley on vocals. The passion for the blues runs deep... and the music is irresistible.
We’re delighted Rae and the Royal Peacocks are here in the SMV for Tunes By the Tracks. The concert is free and the music goes on “come rain or come shine”. The show is Friday June 21st from 7:00 PM- 9:00 PM in the municipal parking lot on Main Street in Stone Mountain Village.
Don’t forget your lawn chair! Beer, wine, and soft drinks are available to enjoy. Donations go to keeping Tunes By the Tracks free to enjoy and talented roots, blues, and Americana artists on the SMV Main Street stage.
