SUGGESTED GEAR REQUIREMENTS
GUIDE ONLY. If experienced at bike-packing, please make your own judgement about what equipment and gear you might carry. If you are new to bike packing, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to talk through gearing & how you should carry it on your bike. I strongly advise everyone new to bike packing to test your setup before the weekend. Bags strapped and fixed to bikes respond very differently in a garage to how they hold up moving over bumps and gravel at speed.
Clothing:
Canberra and the surrounding areas can be extremely cold in winter. It is often wonderful on a fine weather day, but you must come prepared. Materials should be fast-drying and retain thermal properties when wet or sweaty. Wool, polyester, and polypropylene would be advisable. NO cotton.
- General winter riding kit. Please check the forecast and make suitable decisions. Please get in touch if you are unsure about what layering you may need and what you should pack. It is entirely up to you if you’d like to bring multiple items. The more you pack, the more you carry! Personally, I will likely ride in the same kit on both days.
- Rain jacket
- Rain pants (if forecast to be wet)
- Shoe covers (if forecast to be wet or if your feet are sensitive to the cold)
- Warm gloves
- Neck warmer
- Clothes to wear while camping and at dinner. I generally bring clothing that are lightweight and warm: socks (wool), pants, shoes (lightweight plastic Birkenstocks or similar are great), long-sleeve thermals, long-sleeve thermal tights, gloves, beanie, insulated jacket, additional polar fleece jumper or similar, and underwear (or not, there won’t be judgment).
Camping (Braidwood Showground):
If choosing to camp, this is what I would bring.
- Tent or bivvy. The showground has shelter in the form of shearing sheds if the weather is questionable.
- Sleeping bag. Please ensure your sleeping bag is adequate for the temperatures forecasted.
- Sleeping mat
- Cooking stove/boiler. Given that we are staying in a town, this is very optional, but it can be worth carrying for evening hot chocolates or an early morning campsite coffee.
Camping Facilities:
Braidwood Showground. The showground has hot showering facilities and toilets that are open for use, and availability for the weekend has been confirmed. $25 pp, payable at the Colonial Motel in town.
Repair kit - preferably bike to be tubeless with sealant topped up.
- Tubes x2
- Patches
- Plugs
- Tyre boot
- Levers
- Gears charged
- Battery pack (for phone and/or navigational devices)
- Lights (front & rear)
- Additional straps. Bike packing bags tend to work beautifully on smooth tarmac but can bounce and lower on rough terrain. Having an extra strap or two is great for this, as well as for strapping unwanted layers as the day (hopefully) warms up.
First aid:
- Emergency blanket (required)
- Ibuprofen, paracemtemol or similar
- Anti-histamine
- Basic first aid including band-aids, gauze, crepe bandages, antibiotic ointment
- Any personal Medic*tion you may require
- If you’re susceptible to feeling the cold like I am, I highly suggest throwing in a couple of sachets of “instant heat.” They have saved my fingers a number of times and can be a great addition to your sleeping bag if it’s really cold at night.
Accommodation in Braidwood:
If you choose to ‘credit card pack,’ there are several accommodation options in town. Please ensure you are ready to roll at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday from the Provisions Deli & Creperie.
