Janet Echelman will discuss her interdisciplinary process of designing immersive sculptures that transform with wind and light. At the scale of buildings, these public artworks integrate unlikely materials ranging from knotted fiber to atomized water particles. Seemingly fragile yet resilient, her sculptures are based on the visualization of data about environmental and geological changes. To develop these complex aerial structures, Echelman draws inspiration from ancient craft, material science, and high-tech fiber engineering.
