A lunch and learn about the radical origins of self-care.
About this Event

Join Madelyne Beckles, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Yoga Teacher, and multidisciplinary artist for a lunch and learn about the radical origins of self-care. This workshop will explore how contemporary wellness is derived from the feminist and civil rights movements of the 1960s and 70s, particularly from writers like Audre Lorde, bell hooks, and Gloria Anzuldua who wrote about the necessity of folks to practice self-care in order to deal with the daily onslaught of oppression. Participants will sit in circle and enjoy some nourishing snacks, practice some light movement and breathwork, engage with source materials, and create personal care plans for the pinch points in life. Participants will leave with tangible tools to implement into their daily routines, and take home materials summarizing all information covered.

Guests are invited to sit comfortably on the floor during the event. Feel free to bring your own blanket to sit on for added comfort. Should you require a chair instead, please inform us in advance, and we will gladly provide one for you. Please be aware that the food served will be eaten with your hands. Additionally, please let us know of any food allergies you may have.

Location details: The group will meet at the Blackwood gallery and head to the outdoor location together. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be held indoors in the Kaneff Centre/Innovation Complex in room 108.

Courtesy Notice: This event involves the preparation of food for attendees, which requires expense and effort. If you register but are unable to attend, please notify the organizers promptly. This will allow us to adjust our food preparations accordingly and release your spot to others, as space is limited.

Accessibility: The venue is accessible to individuals who require barrier-free access. Some movement throughout the campus is required—ramps and curb cuts are in place. The workshop will take place outdoors, 150 metres from The Blackwood Gallery, located on the ground floor of the the Kaneff Centre/Innovation Complex, which includes open spaces, round sloped corners, and windows to facilitate visual communication and navigation. Accessible multi-user gendered washrooms are located at ground level.
