RACHAEL LAVELLEHaving stunned audiences supporting the likes of Lankum and CMAT and secured a nomination for Ireland's prestigious Choice Music Prize, I Love My Brick is thrilled to present Dublin singer/composer Rachael Lavelle at The Lubber Fiend, Newcastle Upon Tyne, as part of her first full UK headline tour.
Permeated by a voice so striking it could have been beamed from the heavens, Rachael's mesmerising craft takes in everything from soaring avant-pop to taught, jazz-tinged electro minimalism. Honed over a decade which also saw her open for Villagers and Anna B Savage, her eclectic, playful and utterly absorbing sound was finally afforded full reign with the release of debut album Big Dreams in November 2023. With influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and Björk to Debussy and Rave, this stirring record embodies the frustrations and isolation felt by a young woman negotiating the pitfalls of adulthood - its narrative touching on social pressures and a quest for purpose, as well as online culture and the vapidity of lifestyle influencers and dating apps.
A word-of-mouth sensation, Big Dreams' excellence was reflected in its Album of the Year nomination at the 2023 Choice Music Prize (essentially the Irish Mercurys), rubbing shoulders with revered acts such as CMAT, Grian Chatten, The Murder Capital and eventual winners Lankum.
On a personal level, I first happened upon Rachael at a show in Manchester back in 2021. From the very first notes I was completely spellbound, and after about two songs had decided I'd endeavour to make a North East headline show happen. It remains among the most captivating introductions to an artist I've experienced. Whether you're already familiar with her music or a total newcomer, I hope you'll enjoy a similar sensation!
KATE AGERSKOW
Opening the show, we're delighted to be welcoming Kate Agerskow back to Newcastle, for what'll be her first gig here in five years!
A firm local favourite for much of the 2010s (both as a solo artist and with acts such as Agerskow, Brilliant Mind and Video Spring), Kate's accomplished songwriting has been much missed in recent times owing to an extended musical hiatus.
Now based back in her hometown Hull, her long-awaited return comes under the new moniker Kate Agerskow, and precedes the release of her first new music since 2018.
Balancing melody and melancholy, deftness and delicacy, the new songs sound as potent and delightful as ever, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her back. Grab your ticket now and be sure to come down early!
