The musical Million Dollar Quartet is based on the true story of a 1956 Sun Records recording session with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. That jam session - and the real-life musicians, songs, and record producers behind it - developed from a long history of blues, gospel and rhythm-and-blues music that became rock 'n' roll. Particularly, music by Black performers who white audiences rarely listened to publicly.
Join Dr. Shana Redmond, Professor of Musicology and African American Studies at UCLA, for a facilitated conversation focused on the myth of how rock 'n' roll developed in this country and the pivotal role of race in that development.
