Wanna paint a big LGBTQIA+ mural?! No experience needed. Join in the fun on Wednesday Work Days ! On August 6 we paint some more! Final mural design unveiled September 5. Bring water and snacks to share! It's a party, y'all. Donations encouraged $5+.
Maria Gabriela Aldana, director of Art of Solidarity, partners with Bmore Liberated LLC, CASA de Maryland, YouthWorks, and Patterson Park Neighborhood Assocation to combat homophobia by creating new public arts and mental health events in Southeast Baltimore. Funded by the Public Arts Across Maryland grant of the Maryland State Arts Council, they creating opportunities for folx of all ages to strengthen connections between youth, gay, lesbian, queer, trans, non-binary, immigrant, Latinx, Black, indigenous, neurodivergent, straight, fluid, and questioning adults as well as non-profits.
"Queernesseseseses" project started in 2024 thanks to a planning grant of the Maryland State Art Council. Ms. Aldana served as a creative consultant to lead a team that recruits, trains, and hires youth to co-lead mural arts workshops that address sexuality and gender identities under the guidance and love of Bmore Liberated therapists. Participants were hosted and guided to create over 70 designs that described their journey of self-love, self-awareness, and sense of community building. Ms Aldana continues the inclusive design process at Patterson Park Community Association meetings in person and virtually for folx to vote, sign up as a volunteer, paid as part of the youth council, and build lasting relationships by this summer in 2025.
