About this Event

The Free Black Women's Library is a literary hub, social site, Black Feminist archive, and community care space that features over 5000 books by Black women and Black non-binary folks, as well as a wide range of free public programs, special events, and creative workshops, a free store, a period pantry, a backyard garden, a virtual reading club, and weekly book swap.

Each month we curate and create programs that explore specific themes and topics.

Queering The Narrative/Poet as The Essayist
A Writing Workshop with Jet Toomer
Saturday, April 25
3PM - 5PM
In this workshop we'll examine the way writers subvert all "the rules' of narrative storytelling. We'll read short excerpts of prose by contemporary, modern and canonical writers of the African Diaspora who defy all conventions on their missions to tell stories.
We'll have a brief discussioin to help frame our methods of approach and engage in writing spirints. Writers will be able to share their drafts, and/or their thoughts about the process.
This workshop is open to Black writers of all genres.
Facilitator's Bio:
Jet Toomer is a writer and community organizer who writes at the intersections of culture, belonging, and queer womanism. Her writing has been featured in Southern Cultures, The Massachusetts Review, Full Bleed. Jet pens a notable column; Tiny Violences on the newsletter platform Substack. Her work extends beyond the page to include facilitating workshops, moderating panels, to performing at live readings. She was born & raised in New York, where she still lives.
