Queer Theatre will be visiting Tate Britain for an LGBTQIA+ tour with Mills Dyer. Theatre-makers and all LGBTQIA+ people are welcome.About this Event
Join us for a Queer Theatre trip to Tate Britain for a brilliant LGBTQIA+ tour exploring British art through the lens of gender identity and sexuality. It’s a chance to see the collection differently, uncover stories that don’t always make it onto the wall text, and spend the day in the company of other LGBTQIA+ theatre-makers.
Enjoy a friendly group visit with Queer Theatre member, Mills Dyer as our tour guide. Come along on your own or bring a friend. Either way, you’ll have people to adventure around this great gallery together.
About the Tour
LGBTQIA+ Tours at Tate Britain explore the gallery’s vast collection of British art through the lens of gender identity and sexuality. These tours are designed to uncover hidden histories and offer fresh queer perspectives on both iconic and lesser-known works.
The tour is led by volunteer guide and Queer Theatre member, Mills Dyer (she/her), who brings personal research and community perspectives to the session. Rather than a standard heteronormative history, these tours focus on:
- Queer narratives: Highlighting artists who identified as LGBTQIA+ (such as Duncan Grant, Gwen John, or Gluck) and exploring the queer subtexts in their work.
- Identity and desire: Themes of gender performance, same-sex desire, and the evolving social politics of Britain (and its Empire), particularly during eras when homosexual acts were illegal.
- Contemporary context: Connecting historical artworks to modern queer culture and conversations.
Any donation we make will be earmarked for Tate’s Identity Led Tour Programme (including LGBTQIA+ and African Heritage tours, plus more identity-led programmes in development).
