Enjoy an evening of LGBTQ+ folk artists at Exeter Library, featuring a fantastic set from George Sansome & Sophie Crawford, with support from queer shanty group Seaweed in the Fruit Locker George Sansome and Sophie Crawford are the founders of Queer Folk – an organisation that researches queer music and champions LGBTQIA+ musicians. After discovering a rich seam of LGBTQIA+ folk songs in the archives, they began performing this powerful repertoire together, breathing new life into long-hidden stories. Accompanied by guitar, bouzouki and accordion, they now take these songs on tour to celebrate the release of their new album.
Sophie’s album Silver Pin was Mainly Norfolk’s album of the year in 2018, and she also plays with Patrick Wolf in his Kinfolk band. George’s debut solo album was one of Songlines magazine’s “Essential 10 Folk Albums of 2020” and he also plays with BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominees Granny’s Attic, and in a duo with Matt Quinn. Together, Sophie and George are bringing queer folk music to audiences far and wide - celebrating and sharing this vibrant musical heritage.

Seaweed in the Fruitlocker is an LGBTQIA+ sea shanty choir formed by Rhys Morgan, exploring queer themes in seafaring history and collective performance through the tradition of shanty singing.
Drawing on lived experience, the choir rework traditional shanties and create new songs, continuing the folk tradition of adaptation across generations. Queer heritage is woven throughout the work through references to queer histories, locations, and the slang language Polari — once widely used within queer communities and by sailors. The project’s title also comes from Polari: “seaweed” referred to a sexually available gay sailor, while a “fruit locker” was a cabin housing gay shipmates.
This event will take place on the main Library floor. There will be a bar serving soft drinks and alcohol.
Doors are at 7.30pm and the music kicks off at 8pm!
