Complex Bodies, Complex Needs: Clinical Approaches to Chronic Illness, Body Image, and Eating Disorders

Date: March 27th, 2026 at 10:00am

Location: 2800 N Orange Ave, third floor

Presentation Description: Eating disorder recovery becomes even more complex when someone is living in a chronically ill or differently abled body. For many, body image disturbance and loss of bodily trust stem from medical trauma, functional limitations, or repeated surgeries. These experiences can contribute to PTSD, anxiety, depression, and an increased vulnerability to disordered eating.

We will discuss how clinicians can recognize and treat trauma and body image concerns rooted in medical conditions. We’ll explore how chronic illness intersects with eating disorder symptoms and how to help clients rebuild trust in a body that may feel unreliable or unfamiliar. Using a resilience-centered approach, participants will learn strategies to support healing, adaptive coping, and sustainable recovery.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

1. Identify three strategies to cultivate resilience and body positivity in individuals living with invisible disabilities and chronic medical conditions.

2. Differentiate body dysmorphia/distortion from body image disturbance and understand their relevance in assessment and treatment.

3. Understand key concepts and approaches for evaluation and treatment planning, including evidence-based treatment modalities for medically complex clients.
