Quarantine Tourism 隔離旅遊

為遏止新冠肺炎，各國隔離患者的密切接觸者和入境旅客。透過測繪調查本港和國外的隔離設施，此展覽將疫情引申的問題重塑為新的建築契機：一種在城鄉邊緣結合旅遊和隔離的混合建築模式，對現有隔離設施提出可行建議。

In response to the global outbreak of COVID-19, countries have mandated quarantine for contacts of patients of COVID-19 and inbound travelers in hotels and other residential facilities. The overwhelmed public health system across continents has also rendered hotels being medicalized to isolate clinically established patients to reduce the occurrence of hospital outbreaks, becoming a form of community-based public health intervention.

“Quarantine Tourism” tries to reframe the problem posed by the pandemic as an architectural opportunity – To imagine a hybrid typology combining tourism & quarantine that forms Pandemic Buffer Zones in the urban-rural fringe: low-density building zones that can facilitate temporary occupation in the form of meditative 'staycation', which also double as quarantine facilities during pandemics. Through mapping research, case studies of quarantine establishments in Hong Kong, as well as past and foreign isolation typologies, this research also formulates proposals for the hybrid programme of “Quarantine Tourism” in the urban-rural setting and other possible improvements on existing quarantine facilities.

The research is commissioned and supported by the HKIA CPD Research Fund 2021, aiming to encourage and support members in advancing knowledge and practice in architectural field through researches. The members of the research team are Marco Siu, Brian Lee, Sharon Kan, Andy Kong and Canossa Chan.
