Title:
Qualitative Methods Workshop: Discourse Analysis
Speaker:
Dr Sweta Baniya
Associate Professor, Department of English, Virginia Tech, USA
Details:
“Without discourse, there is no social reality, and without understanding discourse, we cannot understand our reality, our experiences, or ourselves.” -Phillips and Hardy
In this workshop, we will explore discourse as an interrelated set of texts and the practices that shape their production, dissemination, and reception—including the impacts these practices have within local and global communities. We will consider how everyday discourse, particularly in non-Western societies, reveals the social, political, and cultural forces that govern our lives. By learning how to collect and analyze these discourses, we can better understand issues such as who holds power and what knowledge(s) are circulated across different contexts. During the workshop we will learn definitions, history, and methods of discourse analysis and gain some practical knowledge of developing our research methods. More specifically, in this workshop we will discuss how qualitative researchers approach this method as part of their meaning making process.
The workshop will integrate practical, hands-on exercises in which participants collect small samples of data, analyze them, and attempt at developing thematic understandings of the discourses they encounter. Anyone who is interested in qualitative research methods are welcome and encouraged to come to this workshop. Students with work-in-progress are especially welcome. Interested participants should fill this google form. The registration deadline is 18 December 2025 (3 Poush 2082).
Date: Sunday, 21 December 2025 (6 Poush 2082)
Time: 2:00 to 4:30 pm
