This is the second class in a two-part series designed to introduce participants to the basics of the 19th century waltz and polka. We will spend time reinforcing the basic mechanics and steps presented in Class 1 and will continue this material in Class 2, adding variations for the basic steps based on attendee readiness.
These dances are more physically demanding than the quadrilles and many of the country dances we typically teach, and folks who are very easily winded or become dizzy with rotational movement should proceed with caution.
We encourage participants to change partners throughout class, as this is an important part of building your skills as a social dancer (but we’ll never force you to do so if you aren’t comfortable.)
In beginner classes and at our events, we use the terms “lead” and “follow” to refer to the roles in the dance. All dancers are welcome to dance either role regardless of gender identity or presentation, and you’ll often find members of Footwork & Frolick switching between roles throughout the event. We choose to use modern language to ensure that all of our attendees feel welcome, but the concept of stepping into either role dates from the 19th century and was encouraged in dance classes.
