Quackery & Discovery (2026/27 academic year)
About this Event
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh has a collection of Museum in a Box loan kits which are available for loan to schools in Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
The Quackery and Discovery loan kit is a challenging collection about medical discovery. At times throughout history, medical pretenders known as ‘quacks’ attempted to sell items to ailing patients that appeared to be medical, but were actually useless, or even dangerous! Students will be required to think critically about whether objects in the loan kit are the result of medical innovation or mere quackery. Objects include a ceramic phrenology bust, cupping cups, a bleeding bowl (with a leech!), and a sample of a carbolic suture from the 1800s.
Quackery & Discovery contains three different activity packs, a folder of archive materials and 12 different objects.
