Long before the monumental Qutb complex became one of Delhi’s most celebrated landmarks, this landscape was shaped by the fortified settlement of Lal Kot, associated with the Tomar Rajputs and traditionally attributed to Anangpal.
This curated heritage walk by Uttar Dharohar explores Lal Kot as an important chapter in the making of Delhi. Moving through its surviving stone-built ramparts, massive towers, gateways and traces of the former moat, the walk reconstructs the character of a fortified landscape whose remains are today interwoven with the later monuments of the Qutb area. The walk examines the construction of the fortifications, including rubble-built walls, brick revetments and dressed local quartzite facing, as well as the semi-circular bastions that strengthened the enclosure. It also explores the later extensions of the fort and historic gateways associated with its walls, including the Ghazni, Sohan and Ranjit Gates. Beyond the surviving walls, the walk considers the archaeological remains of Lal Kot and what they reveal about the settlement. Rather than viewing the Qutb Minar as an isolated monument, this experience places it within the older fortified landscape of Lal Kot, tracing the successive phases of construction, expansion and transformation that shaped Delhi.
Please note that the fee is not for access to the site, but rather for the curation of this experience.
