About this Event
In visions of our lives now and a liberated future, we hope for and create the room to be ourselves with one another, however we choose to. The capacity to clothe ourselves and our communities, offers us a new form of care and self-determination. To do so in a space that explicitly honors non-white lineages of textile arts and labor, even more. Join Appuni in the Makery for a sewing series, with 3 different skill levels to pick from. Sewing machines and materials are provided. This course will use all donated and recycled materials, offering us the opportunity to create new life from what we already have.
This class is ONLY for QTBIPOC - queer and/or transgender individuals who are ALSO Black, indigenous, or people of color. Holding the complexity of mixed raced lineages, I ask that white and "white-passing" people refrain from joining this class. There are a constellation of sewing classes available in Oakland (see: Omni Commons!) that are open to people of all racial identities. This round of sewing classes is explicitly for BIPOC and I ask us all to honor that affinity space.
With the intention of gentle and attentive instruction, class size will be kept under 10 people. All participants are required to hi-fi mask (KN95/KF94) the entirety of the series. Surgical masks will not be accepted. This class will be low/no-scent.
CLASS DETAILS:
Beginner class: For all levels.
Monday evenings: October 14, 21, 28, 5:30-8:30 pm
Intermediate I* (sling bag) class: For students who know how to use a sewing machine, and are desiring more complex practice.
Tuesday evenings: October 8, 22, 29 (skipping the 15th) 5:30-8:30 pm
Intermediate II** (chore jacket) class: For students who have constructed basic items independently, and are prepared to learn garment construction.
Saturday mornings: October 12, 19, 26 11-4 pm (Note that this class has more hours, and therefore costs more)
BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE 1:
Black and indigenous sliding scale: $150-350.
POC sliding scale: $200-400
The true cost of this class is $320, considering 9 hours of dedicated instruction time, and countless hours prepping materials and machine maintenance. Please consider paying on the higher end of or higher than the scale if you are able to, to subsidize the cost for another student. Know that regardless of where you land on the scale, I feel lucky to share this skill with you.
INTERMEDIATE 2:
Black and indigenous sliding scale: $250-450.
POC sliding scale: $300-500
True cost: $420 for 15 hours of instruction time.
