Rail projects in Queensland are emerging as a critical component of the State’s expanding infrastructure pipeline, driven by population growth, the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the need for improved transport connectivity across South East Queensland and key regional corridors.

With key projects such as Cross River Rail, Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail, and the Direct Sunshine Coast Line, rail is a key enabler of economic productivity and urban mobility.

However, the sector faces the same systemic challenges impacting Queensland’s Major Projects Pipeline: rising costs, labour shortages, constrained productivity, and complex procurement and approval processes. With rail projects contributing significantly to workforce demand, particularly in Brisbane and South East Queensland and forming part of a pipeline valued at over $127 billion, their successful delivery will depend on stronger collaboration between government and industry, improved procurement efficiency, and targeted investment in skills and capacity to ensure these transformative projects move from planning to delivery with certainty.
