About this Event
Lightning Rod is a QTPOC-led arts organism dedicated to the Legacy, Development, and Opportunities of Queer, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming artists and activists creating culture in the twin-cities.
Join us during weekend 1 of Q-STAGE for an afternoon of workshops:
Doors open 15 minutes before start time
12:00pm-2:00pm: Catastrophizing w Marcela and Keila
You do not owe anyone an autobiography. Using Anne Carson’s chapbook Variations on the Right to Remain Silent as a source for inspiration, Marcela and Keila will lead participants in a series of exercises linked to translation, auto-theory, misdirection, and catastrophe. This workshop is for all mediums but will primarily focus on writers, designers, and directors/choreographers. Bring some material you are comfortable playing with in a group setting. Bring a journal or sketch-pad. Choreographers bring a phone for recording and come dressed for movement. This workshop is open to all community and is an explicitly trans and queer affirming space.
3:30pm-5:30pm: QTGNC Vocal Workout with Marcela
Using Bogart and Landau’s Viewpoints book as a springboard, Marcela will lead participants in a series of vocal exercises that will help you strengthen your voice, range, breath, confidence, composition, and performance abilities. Exercises will range from daily conditioning and pre-show ritual to composition and performance tools, all explored in a space with other QTGNC individuals. This aims to be a safer, braver, voice-affirming space to engage in work that is often very vulnerable for queer people, and especially so for trans and gender non conforming people. Bring water and come hydrated. Hot tea will be provided, as will light salty bites (primarily for inflammation). This workshop is exclusive to QTGNC community. This space has the potential to become quite loud and will involve many voices being active at once.
Workshops are Sliding Scale $7-$77.
Q-STAGE is a twin cities queer performance mainstay that has supported and showcased exciting new work form queer artists living and working here on Mni Sota Makoce since 2013. This year’s cohort was selected via open application by a panel including Marcela Michelle, Keila Anali Saucedo, Kat Purcell, J H Shui Xian, Qamar Yochanan, and Valerie Oliveiro, and features shared evenings of new work from writer aegor ray, movement artist Demetrius “ImagineJoy” McClendon, and theater artist Ricardo Beaird, as well as new work from Lightning Rod Core Artist Ensemble Members Valerie Oliveiro, J H Shui Xian, and Marcela Michelle.
