EXTENDING GRACE FOR MENTORSHIP & MENTEESHIP
Extending grace for mentorship and menteeship reminds us that discipleship requires patience, humility, and a willingness to overlook shortcomings. The reason why Ephesians 4:2 admonished us to be completely humble, gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love”.
This scripture verse provides a foundation for both mentors and mentees to navigate their relationship with grace and understanding.
As a mentor, it’s important to shift from criticism to curiosity by focusing on understanding your mentee’s perspective and building them up rather than just correcting all the time. It’s also important to remove the expectation of perfection bearing in mind that no one is perfect, and at the same time responding with patience.
Most importantly, normalising vulnerability as a means to build trust . This implies being vulnerable enough to sometimes share your failures or past mistakes and how you overcame them . This makes the mentorship journey easier to deal with and even more relateable for the mentee.
On the mentee’s side, it’s also important that they understand that mentors have their personal struggles and limitations and for this reason be appreciative of what their mentors can offer. Also, mentees are expected to be transparent and honest about their blind spots when pointed out by their mentors, and also extend grace to acknowledge not knowing everything and willingness to be a work in progress.
Mentorship is crucial for every individual in life both at the work space or spiritual wise. Effective mentorship begins from the home as a parent and proceeds to the academic phase of an individual’s life as well as the spiritual growth.
Mentorship / Menteeship is a never ending journey if we truly want to attain purposeful living.
For this reason, the July Edition of the Purposeful Lifestyle Forum will be focused on how to navigate this journey or experience of mentorship gracefully.
We are trusting God to be blessed by this discussion.
Kindly save the date and do join us this Saturday the 11th of July, 2026.
