Purple Martins are the only bird in eastern North America to exclusively rely on artificial nest boxes for reproduction. Learn about the ecology and behavior of the beautiful bird so loved by humans because of their approachability and willingness to nest in our backyards in social communities. Hear about how DelNature is studying these animals in collaboration with the University of Delaware and Delaware Audubon using modern technology to track their movements from North to South America, their wintering grounds. Take a follow-up field trip to Bucktoe Creek Preserve to observe colonies of these birds close-up, as well as peer into nests, and band nestlings for research. Go on a walk to examine Bluebird and Tree Swallow nests, and band these nestlings as well. Help an ornithologist as he conducts his research!
June 23 lecture (6-7:30pm); June 25 field trip at Bucktoe Creek Preserve (9am-noon)
Adult | Member $35 | Non-member $45
