The Satavahanas were among the first imperial dynasties in the Deccan and Peninsular India. Spanning two centuries around the beginning of the Common Era, the 'Satavahana Age' witnessed key developments such as urbanization, the emergence of script cultures, trade with the Mediterranean world, and the flourishing of Buddhist monumental architecture.
Coinage, though often overlooked, is a vital source for reconstructing this period. The lecture will highlight the importance of numismatic evidence in understanding the Satavahana era, focusing on post-Mauryan regional polities, revisiting Satavahana chronology, and examining trade and political developments through coins.
Dr Shailendra Bhandare is Curator of South Asian and Far Eastern Numismatics at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and a Fellow of St Cross College. He has previously worked with the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Society for South Asian Studies, and the British Museum, and has published extensively on Indian numismatics and monetary history.
Join us for tea at 6:00 pm before the event.
The lecture will be live streamed—https://youtube.com/live/1sbtlVBjbOA?feature=share
