I (Jeremy Zombii) teamed up with one of my best friends, Abby Gyenizs, to help raise awareness and funds for a cause and charity that are very close to her heart: Donate Life CT
“When my son, Sawyer, was 4 days old, he was admitted to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. At 8 days old, he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. Biliary Atresia, if left untreated, is fatal. Sawyer’s medical team attempted what’s called a Kasai procedure, which only has an approximate 30% chance of working. His procedure seemed to work at first but later failed, and by the time he was 6 months old, Sawyer was in end stage liver failure and would need a life-saving liver transplant.
While waiting for a miracle, Sawyer was in and out of the hospital with many complications. His medication list grew longer, and he was extremely jaundiced and itchy. He developed encephalopathy due to toxins building up in his body, causing him to be lethargic and irritable. He required a feeding tube and high calorie formula to get the nutrition he needed, along with daily medications and vitamins. Sawyer and I spent most of our time in and out of the hospital for the first year of his life. When Sawyer was 9 months old, his uncle (my brother, Tyler) gave a portion of his liver to save my son’s life. Since Sawyer’s transplant, he has developed many food allergies, continues to take many medications every day, and has a weakened immune system. He battled post-transplant lymphoma but, after months of treatment, is now in remission. Sawyer has a long list of medical professionals on his side continuing to care him. Although this has been a rollercoaster of a journey, he is growing and thriving every day.
Because of organ donations, Sawyer is here with us today. He is one of the funniest, smartest, and most loving kids I have ever met. He has gone through more in his 4 years than most adults have gone through their entire lives, but he celebrates every day with a smile on his face. Because of Donate Life CT, Yale, and Uncle Tyler, Sawyer gets to continue to grow and make memories while living life to the fullest.
Going through this experience with my son has changed my life in so many ways. It has brought my entire family closer together, has made me thankful for every day and moment with my loved ones, and it has shown me how important it is to support and give back to those around you. Since the beginning of Sawyer’s journey, I have promised to give back to organizations that helped us most, and I am now a volunteer for Donate Life CT.
More than 1,000 people in CT alone are waiting for a life-saving organ donation. They may be your neighbors, coworkers, family, or friends. Donate Life CT is dedicated to public education and awareness of the lifesaving benefits of organ and tissue donation, as well as increasing the number of registered donors. Donate Life CT supports those waiting for either a living or deceased donor, those looking to become a living donor, or those deciding if they would like to register to be an organ donor. “
