Join us on the farm to recycle your seasonal pumpkin and gourd decor with the help of our Community Compost program's vertical drum system. Participants can embrace the process of diverting food scraps by smashing their pumpkins, with various tools for smashing available. All pumpkins excepted, not just ones purchased from the farm!
PLEASE NOTE: PUMPKINS WITH GLITTER OR PAINT CANNOT BE COMPOSTED. PLEASE DO NOT BRING TO THE PUMPKIN SMASH!
The vertical drum system is part of a larger initiative that was launched earlier this year at Pitney Meadows Community Farm, in partnership with Sustainable Saratoga. Our Community Compost Program has been designed to reduce food waste, educate residents on sustainable composting practices, and create a closed-loop system that benefits both our environment and local food systems. This year, we invited 100 residents to participate in the program and have diverted over 6000 lbs of food waste! As we close out our first season of the program, we welcome the community to sign up on our interest form here if they would like to participate with us next year.
The initiative is modeled after the successful Bethlehem Municipal Compost program and in consultation with ANCA Compost for Good and reflects a growing movement toward food sovereignty, sustainability, and circular systems.
This program is free and open to the public to attend.
