ENCOURAGEMENTS
* Participate in the lesson preceding the social dance, as it 1) warms up our dancer bodies and minds, 2) connects us with multiple other dancers and as a cohesive, collective whole, and 3) gives us new vocabulary for more creative and attuned dances. This is how our dance scene continues to root and blossom!
* Dressy attire - whatever that means for you! Let's celebrate!
* Bring dancing shoes, whatever is comfortable for you (though smoother soles are best)! The Barn is an unfinished wood floor, so there is a risk to get a splinter in a bare foot or tear in a sock - and even still, people still choose to do that, sometimes.

CLASS: "Mutual Leading; Breaking Away from Hierarchical and Gender-Defined Models in Social Dances"
Is it possible to lead and follow at the same time? It requires a state of presence and deep attunement between the dancing bodies, allowing them to feel and respond in real-time to mutual stimuli. Presence—the way the entire body manifests through touch—has a tone. The secret to Mutual Leading is learning to modulate this tone. Through transversal techniques of body awareness, contemporary dance, and the fusion of Latin American Social Dances (Tango, Zouk, Forró and Samba de Gafieira), this workshop invites the participants to access other bodily states that lead to the deconstruction of rigid patterns and socially imposed norms, encouraging mutuality, horizontality and non-coercive relationships.

CLASS FACILITATOR BIO:
Samuel Samways is a Brazilian performing artist with 15 years of experience in partner dancing. His research extends to acrobatic movements, floorwork, capoeira, contemporary dance, contact improvisation and the fusion of Latin American social dances, with an emphasis in Brazilian Zouk, Tango, Forró and Samba de Gafieira.He is the creator of Mutual Leading, an improvisational technique that challenges the hierarchical structures traditionally associated with gender roles in social dance. Samuel is the director of Terceira Margem, an art collective interested in the intersection between dance, theater and circus. He is also the creator of the dance festival MONSTRA – Festival de Dança de Salão Contemporânea.

DJ BIO:
DJ GaiaWise (Kyra Auerbach) has been movin' & shakin' it up for decades, with years of dancing and dj'ing for fusion, freestyle, contact improv, five rhythms, ecstatic, and open floor. Kyra is a founding organizer of Dance Sebastopol, VocaLab, and North Bay Fusion. When she ain't on the dancefloor or singing, Kyra works for Science and Spirit Studio designing interactive exhibits about science and spirituality.

We also love our partnership with Soft Medicine in downtown Sebastopol where we come together in their beautiful upstairs Dance Temple. We are based out of Sebastopol, CA and aim to connect partner dancers in Sonoma County, CA and beyond.
