CHANNEL ONE SOUND SYSTEM

Established in the late 1970s by siblings Michael and Trevor Bailey, Channel One Sound System originated when they were passed control of their father's Admiral Bailey sound. They introduced the sound to nearby blues parties and dance events. The choice of the name Channel One was a tribute to the iconic Channel One studio in Jamaica, a place from which the brothers procured many of their records. During this era, accessing new reggae music proved challenging for Jamaicans, as it was not featured on radio or in local nightclubs. Instead, the communities organized blues parties and shabeens, where sound systems played the latest and most popular reggae tracks.
In 1982, Channel One started performing at Notting Hill Carnival. Set up by London’s Caribbean community, Notting Hill is one of the largest street festivals in the world. They have performed here every year since (except for the covid years). Channel One Sound System has been a prominent and integral part of the Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event held in London that celebrates Caribbean culture, particularly the Afro-Caribbean communities. The sound system has played a significant role in shaping the musical landscape of the carnival and contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.
Channel One is led by Mikey Dread, original selector, who plays a strictly vinyl selection from his one turn table. Alongside Mikey Dread are various vocalists and MCs who compliment the music with Rastafarian song and chanting. Current MCs are Macky Banton and Ras Sherby. Channel One play a unique selection of conscious reggae, exclusive dubplates and uplifting steppas. Channel One’s hand built sound system provides a rich heavyweight bass sound, which compliments their tight selection of old and new roots music.
Channel One’s mission is “to break down barriers via reggae music”, they have achieved this by travelling and playing to new audiences and venues all over the world. .
Channel One’s profile has gone from strength to strength, holding a residency in one of London’s coolest warehouse venues - Village Underground. Channel One have taken their sound system to festivals all over Europe, as well as performing DJs sets all over the world, including Colombia, Mexico, India, Nepal, Thailand, Dubai and many more.
Channel One never fail to provide upliftment with their positive music and message.
RAS SHERBY
https://rassherby.com/
Singer/songwriter/producer and studio engineer Ras Sherby is a founder of both the fast-growing Ayres Production record label and the Zion Studio Music studio facility based in Wembley suburb of northwest London. Born and raised in the hillside town of Sligoville in Jamaica’s St. Catherine parish, Ras Sherby attended the Sligoville All Age School and went on to attend Jonathan Grant High School in Spanish Town.
Ras Sherby has sung from his early years in the local church choir and at school events before reaching the dancehalls and local shows in the area. Although he found it difficult to break into the island’s notoriously tough music Industry, Sherby found his musical feet when he came to the UK in the early ‘00s. In 2007, Ras Sherby released his debut album Time is of the Essence, which made him known on the worldwide reggae scene as a positive, uplifting up-and-coming artist, with the album’s title track doing very well in Europe and the UK. His 2011 follow-up album, Frontline, also did well. Along the way, Sherby has released a slew of singles, including “Rule Dem Rastafari”, “Wake Up and Live”, “Stand Up”, and most recently “Set Me Free.” When he’s not in the booth, you’ll always find Ras Sherby at the mixing desk making a new track or editing a song.

Small Axe Sound is an international dancehall reggae sound with many bases all over the world. The Sound was named after a song, done by Bob Marley in 1971. The message is about justice & equality and it reminds people of their ability to take matters into their own hands, if necessary. The lyrics counteract against oppression and call out for self defense and revolution, if human rights are violated.
Small Axe Sound was formed back in the 1980's by Zimbabwe's legendary dancehall selector Farai Shambare. It started off humbly playing reggae in the ghettos of Zimbabwe. It was during this time that Small Axe Sound proved their talent and grew to be one of the best sound systems in the country. Over the years, Small Axe Sound produced some of the country's wickedest dancehall talent. Big respects reaching out to some of the early selectors- Selecta Caesar, Kuda Culture, Gidza Banton and Shelaz.
Small Axe Sound spread its wings to the U.K in the early 90s with Farai Shambare as the sole ambassador for the sound. He made Small Axe a popular sound system during his regular gigs at the Rastafarian H.Q in Kennington, South East London. Small Axe also proved ready to cut down any big tree with a clash against Jamaica's legendary clash selector Ricky Trooper (playing for Jaro) back in 1997.
Maybe because no internet communication tools were available yet in these times, a new generation started carrying this great name and work in the 90's - without knowing about the other crew's existence.
Sensi Ryder & the crew from Aken built one of the earliest "real soundsystems" (equipped with dubplates, heavy speaker sets & stuff) in Europe ('98/'99), and made Small Axe known well all over the continent.
As a sad fact their Manager & MC 'Mical' passed away early in 2009; he's gone but not forgotten - RIP MICAL!!!
Today the crew is back on the road with new strenght & energy; ready for the world! In the US it was YT & his crew from Cincinnati & Portland, Father Jakes & Dj Collin from Bridgeport and last but not least DJ Fabulous from New York who accompanied the sound into the new millennium.
In 2009 all the Small Axe sound crews began connecting each other and they renamed to “Small Axe Intl Movement.” Tha Plan is unity & more strength, and it shows how many small pieces make a big one. All out of many - one axe; ready to fall big tree!
The sound plays every weekend, all kind of events, all type of styles. The teams are well experienced and have played many countries and the biggest festivals on the global scene. In 2009 YT & his crew took the title at the annual US Northwest Cup Clash. In 2010 the UK Crew with Likkle T & Cyanide took the title at 'Fire in the City' soundclash in London.
Small Axe comes with a heavy and unique dubplate selection, which guarantees explosive performances in every situation. Music policy is Jamaican 70's, 80's, 90's up to the latest Dancehall, Soca, Hip Hop & other Club styles - depending on the event style.
