Opening new ground for the case for decolonization of Puerto Rico
About this Event

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean Nation forged over four hundered years that was invaded by the United States and whose people continue to struggle for their independence and social justice. Please join Olga Sanabria Dávila for a discussion regarding the colonial situation of Puerto Rico and the importance of the application of international law to the colonial case. A current update of the situation on the ground in Puerto Rico will be shared.

The case of Puerto Rico is important for left and anti-imperialist forces in the United States because there are five million Puerto Ricans living in this country and their struggle for independence simultaneously takes place in the United States and on the island. Puerto Ricans living in the United States also share common living conditions and objectives with all progressive sectors in this country, including so-called "minorities."

Olga I. Sanabria Dávila has dedicated many years to the international presentation of the colonial case of Puerto Rico, including at the United Nations. Her work to garner support for Puerto Rico’s decolonization under international law has taken her to several continents and many cities throughout the Caribbean, Central América and the United States.

She is a founding member of several organizations that have spear-headed work on Puerto Rico at the international level. Her educational background in New York and Puerto Rico includes a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism and a Juris Doctor.

For decades Ms. Sanabria been active in her community in New York and in many social and political issues in Puerto Rico, where she now resides. At present she is attempting to open new ground to advance the case of Puerto Rico at the United Nations and internationally.
