Publishing Ourselves
Workshop: The Diasporic Books (1 hour)
About this Event
This event brings together three Sinophone queer artists to share their creative experiences and reflect on a few questions: Why do we keep creating? What challenges do Sinophone queer artists face in expressing themselves across languages and identities in an English-dominated society? And what new possibilities might emerge along the way?
After the panel, you’re welcome to join an optional fictional writing workshop to explore and create “ The Diasporic Books”.

Shou-An
Currently based in London, Shou-An spends most of the day running errands while claiming to be a “darkroom manager,” while also working in a bakery factory to bring home the metaphorical bacon (or in this case, the baos). But their busy schedule does not prevent them from engaging in the contemplation of romantic fantasy and aestheticism through personal practice.
Working across photography, video, installation, performance, and text, Shou-An draws inspiration from everyday life and explores deeply personal themes in these works.
Shou-An’s recent musings-turned-projects include The Ugly Bao Project, which uses photography, sound, and performance art to address food waste caused by mass production; and The Tea Project, an exploration into process-as-art. For this project, they returned home to Taiwan to develop organic caffenol developer recipes using their family’s own tea leaves. The project utilizes manual labour as a form of healing and bodily engagement to commemorate family history.
Shou-An’s work has been presented in recent years across Taiwan, the UK, Finland, and South Korea.
