💡✨Meteorite Nite - South Africa's Meteorite Heritage and the Nqweba Meteorite Fall of 25th August, 2024
n 25 August 2024, videos and photographs surfaced on social media of a bright, rapidly-moving fireball in the sky above the Eastern Cape Province that was followed by loud thunder and ground tremors. Within minutes, a nine-year-old girl reported picking up a rock that she said she saw fall from the sky. What became known as the Nqweba Event captured international attention and delivered a rare type of meteorite. In this talk, Prof. Roger Gibson of the School of Geosciences will describe South Africa's meteorite heritage and present the results of the scientific investigation into the fireball phenomenon and the meteorite.
Fragments of the Nqweba Meteorite and other South African meteorites will be on display before and after the talk.
Join Roger Gibson a Professor of Structural Geology and Metamorphic Petrology in the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and is the author of 3 books, including Meteorite Impact!, about the world's largest impact structure near Vredefort in the Free State Province. He has published more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific papers on metamorphic rocks, structural geology, impact craters and meteorites focussing mostly on southern Africa but including craters in Libya, Ghana, Brazil, Mexico and the USA. He has participated in three successful meteorite recovery expeditions in Madagascar, Botswana and South Africa.
