About this Event

Symposium Information

The Saskatchewan Epidemiology Association (SEA) is thrilled to announce our 23rd Annual Symposium scheduled for September 25, 2024. This will be followed by an interactive in-person workshop on September 26, both taking place in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Building on last year’s success, we are once again looking forward to engaging directly with our valued community of professionals, colleagues, and students. This year’s symposium will delve into epidemiology’s vital contribution to community and population health through both human and animal health lenses.
Our focus will be on navigating public and animal health surveillance amidst the complexities of big data utilization while considering evolving privacy concerns.
We hope you can join us for two enriching days filled with opportunities to network with fellow epidemiologists from diverse specializations within human and animal health sectors at the Atlas Hotel in Regina!
The Saskatchewan Epidemiology Association (SEA) invites all epidemiologists, public health practitioners, veterinary health experts, decision-makers, academics, and students to attend the workshop entitled “An Introduction to Machine Learning for Epidemiologists”. Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that involves the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to perform tasks without explicit instructions. Instead, these systems learn from data, identifying patterns and making predictions or decisions based on that data. Machine learning is a rapidly growing area of research and practice, which can seem intimidating on the surface. This workshop will demystify concepts and machine learning and related to epidemiology.
This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of the concepts of machine learning and relate them to epidemiological and biostatistical approaches to data analysis. Using R, the workshop will provide examples of machine learning approaches to logistic regression and Random Forest methods.
While there is no expectation to know the R programming language, some experience with SAS, Stata, or R, is an asset. The workshop is limited to 30 participants so please register early. Lunch and coffee will be provided for attendees. Detailed slides and code will be provided prior to the workshop.
Location:
CB 234 College Building - University of Regina. College Avenue Campus, 2155 College Avenue (Regina).
Date/Time: September 26, 2024 9 AM to 4 PM
This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Daniel Fuller, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, University of Saskatchewan
If you are registering for the symposium, workshop, or both you do NOT need to get a membership ticket! It is included in the price of the event ticket.
Breakfast, bio break refreshment and lunch included in Symposium registration. Bio break refreshment included in Workshop registration pricing. If you have any dietary restrictions, please note them on the registration page.
