About this Event

In 1776, when Phi Beta Kappa’s founding members gathered to discuss topics beyond the purview of their College of William & Mary education, they knew not only that freedom of expression was crucial to a vibrant democracy and culture, but that friendship and literature strengthen one another. We’re celebrating that legacy by showcasing exceptional publications and the ways that knowledge inspires action.

This gathering is for readers, writers, artists, editors, students, teachers, zinesters, and the publication-curious alike. Make connections with fellow literary lovers, learn about local presses and literary organizations, or try your hand at making a zine. No publishing experience needed. It's all happening at the Pub Fair!

The Pub Fair will include a table for The American Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa’s award-winning quarterly magazine of public affairs, literature, science, history, and culture. This event is cohosted by the Phi Beta Kappa Association of the Chicago Area.

More About Phi Beta Kappa’s 250th Anniversary

In 2026, the Phi Beta Kappa Society celebrates its 250th anniversary with a nationwide series of anniversary events bringing together arts and sciences leaders, Phi Beta Kappa members, and friends of Phi Beta Kappa for programs that celebrate the values that have guided us since our founding in 1776. Freedom of thought, inquiry, and expression, embodied by independent publishing, are hallmarks of our society and central to its future.

On Tuesday, September 29, Phi Beta Kappa will also host "Free Expressions: Academic Freedom and the Public Good" at the Chicago Cultural Center. The event features a keynote address and fireside conversation with Dr. Carla Hayden, who served as the 14th Librarian of Congress, reflecting on the indispensable role of libraries, scholarship, and the open exchange of ideas in sustaining a vibrant democracy and culture.
