Your Topic:

Psychological insights and interventions on (mis)information

The World Economic Forum recently named misinformation, false or misleading claims, as a leading global threat. At the same time, people are finding it increasingly difficult to tell apart true and false information, reporting lower trust in journalists and mainstream media, and increasingly avoiding the news for being too negative and presenting problems they can do nothing about. I’ll present research from Adelaide University around how psychology can contribute to understanding responses to misinformation, including its connections to societal attitudes and ways we can address it. I’ll also present work on constructive journalism, which applies psychological theory and insight to news production, with an aim to produce news that is less misleading, more responsible, and less anxiety and depression invoking.

Your Speaker:

Dr Natasha van Antwerpen is a Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Adelaide University. She uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to investigate the interaction between psychology, modern information environments, and our understanding of truth - with a focus on how we can apply psychology to journalism; misinformation and its connection to broader societal attitudes; and how philosophical beliefs influence people's values and wellbeing.
