About this Event

About this seminar

The choice between psychotherapy and Medic*tion as the first-line treatment for depression is a subject of intensive debate. In most cases, the decision is determined by personal preferences and treatment availability. It is still unclear whether the relative efficacy of psychological treatment and antidepressant Medic*tion changes with the stage and course of depressive disorders (first-episode, recurrent, persistent), demographics, physical health, and physiology.

In this talk, Professor Uher will show early results from recently completed and ongoing studies of cognitive-behavioural therapy and antidepressant pharmacotherapy in depressive disorders. He will examine the relevance of illness course, age, symptom profile, history of childhood maltreatment, electroencephalography, speech, and biomarkers of inflammation and metabolism. He will discuss the results in the context of the broader program of the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND), including trials testing the benefits of biomarker-based allocation to treatments.

About the speaker

Professor Uher completed medical school and a Ph.D. in neuroscience at Charles University, Prague. He trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and conducted research on eating disorders, depression, and genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry (now IoPPN). For the past 13 years, Professor Uher has been working on biomarker-informed clinical trials with the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND).
