The violin sting heard ‘round the world. A lonely motel. A woman with $40,000. A man and his mother. It was a dark and stormy night when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) pulled up to the Bates Motel. On the run after stealing a large amount of cash, Crane suddenly finds herself at the mercy of the Motel’s strange manager, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Though Norman is initially charming and attentive, it quickly becomes clear that something sinister lies below the surface, sending Marion down a road she could’ve never expected.
Since its release in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO has unsettled generations of viewers with its plot twists and misdirection, its unforgettable score, and its inventive use of camera and editing. It’s established itself as one of the most influential horror films of all time, and its iconic status and Perkin’s unforgettable performance is both muddled and enriched by the film’s oft-alleged queer-coding. This spring we invite you to visit (or revisit) the Bates Motel, and to peer into its dark corners and murky depths with an audience by your side.
