PSLE English Oral SBC Workshop

Help your child anticipate questions, develop ideas and make responses personal and engaging.

Many students can describe a photograph but struggle when the conversation moves to issues that are less directly connected to what they see.

This hands-on workshop helps students recognise these connections and anticipate possible questions. In a small group of up to 10 students, they will learn to elaborate with relevant details and draw on their own experiences to speak with greater confidence and fluency.

What Your Child Will Learn

• Anticipate possible questions, including those indirectly related to the photograph.
• Identify broader themes and issues using clues from the stimulus.
• Describe emotions and actions effectively to bring static photographs to life.
• Structure and elaborate on answers with explanations, examples and specific details.
• Use personal experiences in every response to make answers more engaging and easier to develop.
• Explore common SBC themes and build a bank of experiences to draw on.

Our Approach

Developed from extensive coaching experience, this workshop tackles a common challenge: knowing what to say when a question goes beyond the photograph.

Students learn how to make informed “guesses” about possible questions by connecting what they see to broader issues. This helps them use preparation time purposefully and generate ideas for different directions the conversation might take.

We also teach students why personal experiences matter in every response. A general statement can be difficult to expand on. A familiar experience gives them concrete details to share—what happened, what they did, how they felt and what they learnt.

Through guided practice, students learn to choose relevant experiences and connect them to the question. These personal connections help them develop fuller answers, hold the listener’s interest and express their own perspectives in natural, spoken English.

Who Should Attend?

Primary 5 and Primary 6 students. Primary 4 students are also welcome.

Maximum group size: 10 students, allowing for interaction and guided practice.

About the Trainer

The workshop is led by Siew Ling Hwang, founder of Discovering Potential, Interview and Communication Coach, and author of the PSLE Oral SBC Guidebook, now in its second edition.

Siew Ling has extensive experience coaching students in PSLE Oral through group workshops and individual sessions. She is also a Certified Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and a Certified Advanced Behavioural & Career Consultant.

4 hours program (9 am to 1 pm)

• Reference slides will be provided
• Every participant will receive a copy of the PSLE Oral SBC Guidebook (2nd edition) which retails for $34.90 each.

Fees

$320 per participant (workshop fees are not refundable but may be transferred to another participant). Only the registered participant may attend, parents and guardians are not permitted in the workshop.

Info: Use our PEES method as an effective scaffolding to present holistic answers that are clear, systematic and complete

Turn pictures into words

Info: Use our CLUES method to fully utilise the stimulus. Learn step by step techniques how to look at the picture systematically and translate it into words.

Key challenges - let's learn

Info: Feel as if there is nothing to say about the picture, not sure if you can say that you have never done what the stimulus shows, unable to think of experiences? All these on the ground, real challenges will be discussed. Learn tips on how to address them.

🕑: 11:00 AM - 01:00 PM
Practice, practice, practice

Info: Using a carefully selected range of different photo stimulus, put all the theory learnt into practice. Different pictures will present a different challenge, exposing you to more useful techniques. This is an important segment involving hands on practice, discussions, feedback and coaching.
