PRS 90th Anniversary Celebration – FREE EVENT

Architectural History Presentation by Ann Burckle

Memories of Manly P. Hall Conversation with John Pillsbury

Please join us for a free event in the Auditorium celebrating PRS’s 90th anniversary as part of the Los Feliz and greater Los Angeles community! We’ll also be commemorating the passing of Manly P. Hall (March 18, 1901 – August 29, 1990), the acclaimed author and scholar who founded PRS in 1934 and wrote over 150 books and pamphlets on metaphysics, mythology and esoteric subjects.

First up will be an illustrated ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY TOUR OF PRS hosted by PRS Board vice president Ann Burckle. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the architectural history (and some of the hidden mysteries) of The Philosophical Research Society’s landmark buildings – who was Robert Stacy Judd, the original architect of PRS? what was located at Los Feliz and Griffith Park boulevards before PRS was built in the mid-1930s? where were books printed on site at PRS in the 1940s and 1950s? – this is your opportunity. PRS was awarded landmark historic status in 1994 by Los Angeles County, and this illustrated lecture including rare archival photos of PRS in the 1930s and 1940s is a unique glimpse into its rich architectural legacy as one of the hidden gems of Los Feliz.

Followed by an onstage conversation with John Pillsbury, PRS President and Chairperson of the Board, who will share his own personal memories of knowing Manly P. Hall and Hall’s continued importance and relevance as a renowned esoteric author and scholar.

Ann Burckle is a real estate investment strategist with experience in developing impact analysis, highest and best use analysis and valuation opinions. A native Californian, she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Redlands. She is currently a principal with West Coast Appraisal Service. Her community involvement is extensive as she is a member of the Southern California Leadership Network, a fellow with the Leadership LA and Leadership Southern California programs, and a docent with the Getty Center (architecture and garden guide). Additionally, she has guided architectural tours for the Los Angeles Conservancy, USC Black Alumni and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has held volunteer leadership positions with Pasadena Heritage including the chairperson of the Craftsman Weekend event, and member of the Development and Education Committees as well as a former Board member. She is also a former Board member of EXP (formerly known as International Trade Education Program).

John Sanborn Pillsbury has been a student of the works of Manly Palmer Hall since the age of fifteen, and a continuous supporter of PRS throughout his adult life, serving in many different capacities. John also serves as president of a private philanthropic foundation, and is co-founder, producer and secretary of the Ventura County Gilbert & Sullivan Repertoire Company. He is about to enter his fifth decade of service to these and other nonprofit organizations.
