Providence Philosophy Club's Monthly Meetup!

Join us on Thursday, March 26th at 6pm for Providence Philosophy Club!!!

This time around, one of Providence Philosophy Club's familiar faces, James Hurley, will be moderating our meetup.

For this meeting, club members will be reading Charles S. Pierce's "Fixations of Belief".

Members who have signed up for our email list will receive two different copies of the essay in an email a few weeks before our meetup.

James has generously created a list of topics that attendees can view before the event that will also be included in that email.

About our moderator:

Jim Hurley is trained in the sciences with a chemical engineering undergrad degree and a PhD in Medical Device Polymers.

Regarding his interest in philosophy, an insightful perspective comes from Georg Lukacs: "Philosophy is born in the rift between the internal world and the external world." He encountered such a rift at age 16, when he lost my faith. He needed to re-establish a worldview then, but one that was based in the reality of the physical world, and in its truths. Along with literature, philosophy has been essential in helping him to re-establish a reliable and coherent world-view. The effort is perpetual, as the depths of reality are infinite…

And so, to paraphrase Shelley from his Defense of Poetry: Science and the Arts (Poetry, Philosophy, etc.) both do the same thing: they search for the truth beneath the surface – the Sciences for things that can be measured, and the Arts for things that can’t be measured.
