About this Event
Providence Mob Tour is a 1 1/2 to 2 hour walking Mafia history tour through the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, RI, once the headquarters of the New England Mafia. This tour takes you through the history of organized crime in the city of Providence, the locations of some of the more notorious mob-associated events that have occurred including gangland murders and the hangouts of the Mafia Don and his Capos.
In the 20th century, Providence became the headquarters of the New England Mafia, led by Mob Boss Raymond L. S. Patriarca. From his office on Providence's Atwells Avenue, Patriarca ran an empire of crime from 1954 until his death in 1984.
Teeming with history, Providence is one of America’s most fascinating cities. Settled in 1636 by Roger Williams who was expelled by the Puritan leaders from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for spreading "new and dangerous ideas." He established Providence Plantations as a refuge offering what he called "liberty of conscience". In 1638, he founded the First Baptist Church in America, also known as the First Baptist Church of Providence. Providence residents were among the first Patriots to spill blood in the lead-up to the American Revolutionary War during the Gaspée Affair of 1772, and Rhode Island was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown on May 4, 1776. It was also the last of the Thirteen Colonies to ratify the United States Constitution on May 29, 1790, once assurances were made that a Bill of Rights would become part of the Constitution.
