Providence Mending Series: Learn to Hand Stitch & Sew on Buttons
About this Event
The Nest invites you to repair, personalize, and rewear your clothing- keeping cherished garments in use and out of the landfill, one stitch at a time.
Over the course of two hours, you and up to 7 other participants will learn the basics of hand stitching and how to sew on a button at The Nest in Providence, RI.
Class Curriculum:
The workshop will begin with an overview of hand stitching. This introduction will include visual examples of various hand stitch techniques such as: running stitch, backstitch, blanket stitch and catch stitch. You will learn about the tools required for hand stitching, and receive guidance on when hand stitching is best used for repairing a damaged garment. You will also learn how to sew on buttons.
The second part of the workshop will focus on a hands on demonstration, with students following along as they practice the hand stitching on their own garment or a provided piece of fabric.
Participant Outcomes: Participants will gain practical skills they can use at home to help extend the life of their clothes, reduce textile waste, and build a more intentional relationship with clothing. The goal of the workshop is for students to leave with the skills to repair and maintain their favorite clothing using simple hand-sewing methods, without the need for a sewing machine.
What to Bring: Participants are encouraged to bring their own garments with missing buttons, but this is not required.
This workshop is for those who are brand new to sewing, no prior experience necessary! This course aims to use the most accessible tools and has a low barrier to entry.

Meet Your Teacher:
Keelin Maloney (she/her) is a Providence native, textile lover, and fiber arts community educator. Keelin is the lead Mending Technician for The Nest's Mending & Repair Service. She has a background in hand knitting & sewing, machine knitting & sewing, crocheting, weaving and natural textile dyeing. Her years in fine art school have led her to create her own knit collections and participate in various local sustainable fashion projects. She also teaches knitting, crochet, embroidery & natural dye bath workshops.
