Chemmani, a village in the Tamil homeland near Jaffna, has become one of the most significant mass grave sites in Sri Lanka. More than 426 bodies have so far been uncovered, with investigations continuing.
Following the genocidal actions of the Sri Lankan state, Sri Lanka became one of the countries with the highest numbers of enforced disappearances in the world.
Today, the truth is emerging as our loved ones are being unearthed from mass graves across the Tamil homeland.
Among those discovered are schoolchildren buried in their school uniforms, still carrying their UNHCR issued school bags.
For many survivors, these discoveries reopen wounds that have never healed. Our families were denied the chance to lay our loved ones to rest with dignity, denied the truth about what happened to them, and denied justice.
Many of the military commanders and political leaders who have overseen these atrocities continue to enjoy the protection of successive Sri Lankan governments, including the current NPP government. Meanwhile, the structures that enabled these crimes continue to shield those responsible while presenting a progressive image to the world.
Join us as we stand in solidarity with the victims and their families, and call on the international community to support an independent international investigation, establish the truth about these mass graves, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
