What is at stake in this year’s US Presidential Election? Why do US politics matter for the UK and the world? At this event, Durham Cathedral Institute welcomes Dr Fiona Hill, Chancellor of Durham University and a former presidential advisor, to examine these issues in conversation with Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham.
In modern history, a US Presidential Election has rarely been more significant, both in policy terms and in the choice facing the US electorate. In seeking a second non-consecutive term as president, Donald Trump hopes to achieve a feat unknown since 1892, whilst Kamala Harris would become the first woman to occupy the White House and only the second person of colour. Their competing visions for providing both domestic and global leadership on major issues, including the pursuit of peace, could shape the world for decades.
Speakers:
Dr Fiona Hill is Chancellor of Durham University, an acclaimed foreign affairs specialist and author, and a former advisor to George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. She served on the US National Intelligence Council from 2006 to 2009 and was a member of the US National Security Council from 2017 to 2019. Born is Bishop Auckland, the daughter of a coal miner, Hill’s many publications include an autobiography, There is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century (Mariner, 2023). Hill remains a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a non-profit public policy organisation based in Washington DC, conducting in-depth research into new ideas for solving problems facing society at local, national and global levels.
