Promoting Emotional Regulation in Adults with Adverse Childhood Experiences

This continuing education webinar introduces neuroeducational interventions aimed at addressing the challenges faced by adults with a history of childhood adversity. These approaches enhance emotional regulation, promote secure attachment, and address trauma-related memories, providing tools for improved well-being and healthier relationships. This presentation explores how adversity affects emotional regulation and attachment, impacting individuals' relationships and life outcomes. It integrates insights from neuroscience and psychology, highlighting interventions that foster resilience and memory reconsolidation. Attendees will learn practical strategies to support clients in reducing distress, enhancing emotional and relational capacities, and restructuring internal working models, The focus is on providing evidence-based, adaptable tools for applications in diverse psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational settings.

1. Identify two key brain regions impacted by trauma that are involved in the memory disruption of childhood experience
2. Gain knowledge and practical techniques to facilitate memory reconsolidation in therapeutic settings
3. Participate in a guided visualization exercise designed to foster the development of earned secure attachment
4. Analyze the impact of childhood adversity on emotional regulation and attachment, and its implications for adult well-being and relationships

About the Presenter

Barbara Koretz, PsyD holds a Doctorate in Psychodynamic Child Psychology and Psychotherapy from Reiss-Davis Graduate School and is a licensed clinical social worker with over 40 years of experience in trauma-informed psychodynamic psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She is certified as an Empathy and Attachment-Based Parent Educator. Dr. Koretz integrates neurobiology, attachment theory, and developmental psychology into her work, with a particular focus on supporting individuals suffering from complex trauma. Since completing her doctorate in July 2023, she has presented her research on neuroeducation and emotional regulation at the American Board of Clinical Social Work's annual conference.

Dr. Koretz gained extensive experience working in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, hospitals, and community organizations. She provided crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and case management for culturally diverse populations, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and addressing complex psychosocial challenges such as domestic violence, severe mental illness, and family trauma. These early roles laid the foundation for her lifelong dedication to supporting individuals and families in need.
