Projections: Yeelen

This Wednesday, April 2, at 6:30 PM, we invite you to join us for an experimental film program at A Listening Space at 305 E. Garfield Blvd! We are excited to present Projections, a Black Cinema House Project, with a visual screening of Yeelen (dir. Souleymane Cissé, 1987). The film, presented only visually, will be scored by sounds and songs from the Dinh Collection that span the Malian sonic geographies. 

Set in 13th century Mali, Yeelen (translated as The Light or Brightness in Bambara) is a coming-of-age, mythological journey, based on an ancient Mande oral legend of power struggle between a magical son and his vengeful father. Yielding striking images of the African landscape and glowing vignettes of daily life, Yeelen is a tale that forces its viewers to traverse the binaries of good and evil, life and death, light and darkness. The film’s original score of synthesizers and traditional percussion was composed by Malian musician Salif Keita and French jazz instrumentalist Michel Portal.
