À la fois expédition et quête spirituelle, So Surreal: Behind the Masks suit le cinéaste cri Neil Diamond (Reel Injun, Red Fever) dans son voyage d’ouest en est en Amérique du Nord, puis à travers l’océan Atlantique, tout en rassemblant les morceaux de cette histoire d’importance mondiale qui révèle les influences autochtones cachées et méconnues de l’art moderne. Sur le chemin, Neil apprend l’histoire mouvementée d’un masque kwakwaka’wakw volé lors de l’interdiction de potlatch il y a 100 ans et se met sur la quête pour son retour.
Part expedition, part spiritual quest, So Surreal: Behind the Masks follows Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond (Reel Injun, Red Fever) as he travels across North America, from west to east, and across the Atlantic Ocean, piecing together this globally-significant story that reveals the hidden and little-known Indigenous influences on Modern art. Along the way, Neil learns the tumultuous history of a Kwakwakawakw mask stolen during the Potlach ban 100 years ago and sets out on a quest for its return.
