La Fondation JIA et le collectif Miao se réunissent à nouveau pour vous présenter trois documentaires réalisés par des femmes cinéastes asiatiques. Corps dansants et déambulations présente, à travers des parcours personnels et des images d'archives, de grand-es artistes de la diaspora chinoise : du magicien, acrobate et vedette de vaudeville sino-américain Long Tack Sam aux deux chanteuses d'opéra cantonais Caridad et Georgina du Chinatown de La Havane, en passant par la troupe de danse d’inspiration fêtarde Grant Avenue Follies du Chinatown de San Francisco.

La cinéaste Ann Marie Fleming parcourt le monde pour reconstituer l’histoire de son arrière-grand-père, le cosmopolite Long Tack Sam—acrobate et magicien chinois de renommée internationale qui a surmonté l'isolement, la pauvreté, les barrières culturelles et linguistiques, le racisme débridé et les guerres mondiales pour monter l'un des numéros les plus réussis de son époque. Ce documentaire de route tourné à la première personne rend un hommage exaltant, vif et texturé, en célébration de la magie et de l’art de Long Tack Sam.

Ann Marie Fleming est une réalisatrice indépendante dont les œuvres primées, qu'il s'agisse de films d'animation, de drames en prise de vue réelle ou de documentaires, en format court ou long, traitent souvent des thèmes de la famille, de l'histoire et de la mémoire. Née au Japon d'origines chinoise, autrichienne et australienne, elle vit présentement à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique.

Can I Get A Witness? (2024), son dernier long métrage, mettant en vedette Sandra Oh, Keira Jang et Joel Oulette, a été présenté en avant-première au Festival international du film de Toronto (TIFF) et figure sur la liste des 10 meilleurs films canadiens de 2024 du TIFF. Window Horses (2016), avec les voix de Sandra Oh, Shoregh Aghdashloo, Elliot Page et Omid Abtahi, a reçu le Asia Pacific Screen Award du meilleur film d'animation. The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam et Window Horses sont tous deux adaptés en romans graphiques.

JIA Foundation and Miao Collective are collaborating once again to present three documentaries from three Asian women filmmakers. Dancing Bodies, Meandering Stories showcases, through personal journeys and archival research, the great performers within the Chinese diaspora ranging from the Chinese American magician, acrobat, and vaudeville star Long Tack Sam, to two Cantonese opera singers Caridad and Georgina at Havana’s Chinatown, to San Francisco Chinatown’s nightclub-inspired Grant Avenue Follies dancing troupe.

Filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming travels the globe to piece together the story of her great-grandfather, the cosmopolitan Long Tack—an internationally renowned Chinese acrobat and magician who overcame isolation, poverty, cultural and linguistic barriers, extreme racism and world wars to become one of the most successful acts of his time. This first-person road movie celebrates the spirit of Long Tack Sam's magic and art in a richly textured and exhilarating testament to his legacy.

Ann Marie Fleming is an independent filmmaker whose award-winning work in animation, live-action drama and documentary, in both short and long formats, often deals with themes of family, history, and memory. Born in Japan of Chinese, Austrian and Australian heritage, she calls Vancouver, B.C. her home.

Can I Get A Witness? (2024), her latest feature, featuring Sandra Oh, Keira Jang and Joel Oulette, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is on TIFF’s Top 10 list of Canadian Films for 2024. Window Horses (2016), featuring the voices of Sandra Oh, Shoregh Aghdashloo, Elliot Page and Omid Abtahi, received the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Animated Feature. Both The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam and Window Horses are adapted as graphic novels.
