About this Event
Bridging the gap within the health sciences, this year’s 2024 PPW conference will consist of lectures, panel sessions, discussions, presentations, and interactions with healthcare professionals, post-secondary admission representatives, and exceptional undergraduate and graduate students. We hope that through this exposure, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of a career in healthcare and leave with the motivation to achieve their goals. In addition, there will be a variety of workshops for attendees to participate in and booths to interact with. With this engaging and inspirational conference, Project Pulse Winnipeg hopes to make crucial information on the healthcare system accessible to high school students considering a career in the health sciences.
Workshop Options (participants will take part in two of their choice)
M**der Mystery Escape room (PPW Team):
Someone has just been murdered! A group of newly trained crime scene investigators and forensic pathologists must deduce the suspect. Participants will get to interact with several puzzles all relating to different aspects of forensic pathology, such as karyotype analysis, full body examination and blood spatter analysis. Participants will get to race others to complete the room and win a prize! Do you have what it takes to solve this case?
Brain Games workshop (Let's Talk Science):
Students will learn about cells, the nervous system, neurons and action potentials. Everyone will be creating their own neuron and volunteers will be demonstrating how an action potential delivers a signal with our homemade giant neuron.
This workshop is in partnership with Let’s Talk Science from the University of Manitoba!
Nursing workshop (Nursing Students):
Workshop attendees will get to learn from nursing students to properly treat and care for difficult wounds. Learning different dressings, packings, and coverings with gauze and wraps, students get to learn a valuable skill that comes in handy in a variety of ways. Students will get to practice a variety of complex wound care techniques and learn firsthand this practical skill.
This workshop is in partnership with nursing students from the University of Manitoba.
Candy DNA workshop (Let's Talk Science)
Participants will explore the components that make up their genetic code! They will construct a model of double-stranded DNA out of sugary treats! They will discover human genetic relations to other mammals, insects, and food. Finally, they will extract the DNA out of strawberries with simple at-home tools, and substances!
This workshop is in partnership with Let’s Talk Science from the University of Manitoba!
