**PROJECT PAT**
Project Pat is one of the defining voices of Memphis rap and easily one of the most recognizable artists to come out of the scene. Born Patrick Houston, he’s also the older brother of Juicy J, one of the founders of Three 6 Mafia. Because of that connection, Pat’s career grew alongside the rise of the Three 6 Mafia sound that ended up shaping a huge part of Southern hip hop.
What always stood out about Project Pat is how unique his delivery is. His flow has this loose, storytelling style that almost sounds conversational, but it rides perfectly over those dark Memphis beats. A lot of his music uses heavy samples, especially soul and blaxploitation-era music. The Willie Hutch samples are some of the best examples of that. That gritty, cinematic sound fits perfectly with the Memphis production style that Three 6 Mafia popularized.
Pat really broke through in the early 2000s with albums like Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin and Layin’ Da Smack Down. Those records helped bring the Memphis underground sound to a much bigger audience. Songs like “Chickenhead” became huge in the South and eventually spread nationally, helping establish that hypnotic, bass-heavy style that would later influence artists across hip hop.
